What is a food desert?

Civic Hack Day:  What We'll Make

What We Hacked

Paying it Forward

A food desert is an area with a population of at least 500 people who do not have access to fresh produce and vegetables within a one mile distance.

Civic Hack Day brought together citizens, software developers, and entrepreneurs from all over the nation to collaboratively create, build, and invent new solutions using publicly-released data, code and technology to solve challenges relevant to our neighborhoods, our cities, our states and our country.   Our team hacked the problem of food deserts.

Data sets from the City of Chicago on population, farmer's markets, socioeconomic census data, grocery stores, and transportation routes to create a visual of the city's existing food deserts and how to provide better access to residents in these areas to eat fresh and live healthier lives.

Chi Food Oasis hacked the problem of food deserts by using data and maps of neighborhoods in Chicago that are considered to be food deserts.  We invite you to help us continue the development of this project.  Contact us  chifoodoasis@gmail.com
